the little guy

Posted by | Posted in 1526 | Posted on 30-07-2008

He’s been called Butterball, The Little Guy, Hiya Guya, Buddy and more formally Aris T’cat. He came to stay with me for a month which I dubbed Summer Camp, and after many photo-postcards later his dad arrived today to pick him up. After all, school will be starting soon.

This was all a big test run for me, to see if I’m ready for other pets, pets that come after The Twins™. And I don’t think I am, just yet. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Aris and he is such a sweet, affectionate kitty which is great because that’s the way The Twins were. It brought me no small pleasure to be able to scoop Aris up and hold him like a baby, as I did with The Twins, and scratch his underside. He’d sleep with me and greet me in the morning, which is what I like.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to handle his departure but I think I made it thru okay. There were no tears (which i feared would happen) but instead a sense of saying so long to a friend and I’ll see you soon.

training time again

The Army 10-Miler is in ten weeks. Seeing as how I haven’t run (except to catch a bus) since the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler in the spring, it’s time to get the running ramp-up regime going.

Using the novice level of the Cherry Blossom training program, and counting back from October 5 (race day) today is the first lesson and it’s pretty basic. I usually skip these early ones, because I’m doing cardio anyways, but this time I’ll go ahead and go day by day. Good thing I did, too, because now after today’s session I can feel my knees a little weak so in addition to ramping up my cardio it will also strengthen my legs.

Today’s session:
Walk one minute, run two minutes, repeat 10 times. I used an incline of 1.0 on the treadmill, speed 3.5 for walking, 5.5 for running. I’m also going to try and get my speed up a little bit over the next 10 weeks. Normally I’ll run a 10:00 mile, it would be nice to get that down to 9:30. Calories burned: 437. Distance: 2.61 miles.

Then, to reward myself, I accepted Melba’s invitation to have dinner at Good Stuff, Chef Spike’s (from Top Chef) new burger joint located at 303 Pennsylvania Ave, SE, where Pulp used to be located. Opening just a few weeks ago, Good Stuff has been the mob scene at all times of the day but we thought maybe on a Monday evening we’d give it a go.

Of course, it’s still packed, with lines reminiscent of trying to buy an iPhone 3G: you wait outside until you’re cleared for inside, then you wait inside again. And after you order you wait again. Chef Spike was there himself, barking out orders to the plentiful staff working the grills. Wanting to sample the basics, we both ordered the Farmhouse Bacon Cheese (applewood bacon, american cheese, ruby red tomatoes, thinly sliced onion, lettuce and pickles) and split an order of Spike’s Village Fries (topped with fresh thyme, rosemary & cracked pepper). I opted for the Soursop Hop Strawberry handspun shake, while M had the Toasted Marshallow. Note: the shakes are almost as much as the burgers.

While the burgers were good, I don’t think they were as good, and certainly weren’t as big as, Five Guys. Granted, we didn’t order the double burgers so maybe the comparison isn’t the same. But where GS excelled was with their sauces: Chipotle Mayo, Old Bay Mayo and Sriracha Mayo. These were great deviations from the simple ketchup for dipping the fries in. The fries were great, too, btw. And the shakes were thick and creamy but I don’t want to know how many calories that thing had in it. I’m sure I could run today’s training session again and still not work just the shake off.

iTunes has posted the Season Pass for Mad Men, Season 2. Dang if I wasn’t too busy burning through three seasons of Strangers With Candy to have been refreshed on MM, S1 already. I think I can probably skip the recap and dive straight into S2. Like, tonight.

Vanity Fair has posted their full May 2008 interview with Madonna. They’ve also posted a slideshow retrospective of her photoshoots beginning from 1986.

Music video for Tears for Fears Mad World is here. The video for the cover by Gary Jules, taken from the Donnie Darko soundtrack, is here.

Graphjam.com is a website using user-submitted charts and graphs that, while mimicking cheesy office presentations, has content that is influenced by pop songs or pop culture. Some of them are pretty funny. They provide an Excel template for download in a variety of chart styles, all you have to do is enter the content and the numbers. Email it back to them and hope they choose to post it. Here’s my submish:

this thing has a phone in it too?

Posted by | Posted in iphone, music, tech | Posted on 25-07-2008

During last night’s rooftop birthday party for Ammiie(e), iPhone usage consisted of:

• connecting to local WiFi network
• viewing map of Chicago
• Wiki’ing MacArthur Park (Jimmy Webb, author; Richard Harris, original performer)
• listening to samples of band
What Made Milwaukee Famous on iTunes
• writing on Walls and viewing photos on Facebook
• updating iPhone applications
• reading email
• taking photos
• viewing failblog.org
• watching YouTube videos
• sending/receiving text messages
• using PhoneSaber application to attack those trying to eat my nachos
• adding phone number of recently received call to Contacts
• sending Twitter tweets
• scheduling future events in Calendar
• using myLite application for multi-colored strobe during Happy Birthday singalong

UPDATE: I’ve been tweeted! Graeme Thickens, DoApps’ VP of Marketing & chief storyteller, left a comment (you can read for yourself) about my use of their myLite application. I’m sure he found fuju through a google search of “mylite application”. Then he posted a tweet on Twitter about it, with a link to this post:

Well I’ve finally gotten off my ass and sent my inquiry to my new webhost about my FTP problem, and to see if I would be able to update my outside files or whether I’d have to upgrade my plan for full access. Their quick response fell in my favor for both questions. This means that I can, and have now uploaded the last 769 days of posts as well as adding my Twitter feed. Now it’s time to start playing around with the free uploadable themes, or once I’m more comfortable with Cascading Style Sheets, customize my own. But for now I’m happy to have the old posts up and linked. They can be found here or under Rehab. Now to get my Pushers blogroll up and everything will be complete and I can get back to producing random lists and complaining about commuting time.

yazoo!

“One of the things I’ve learned over the last 25 years, is that only once you’ve performed a song live do you really get the essence of what it is you’ve written.”

This is the opening quote from Alison Moyet in Yaz’s tour programme for their Reconnected Tour 2008. Last night’s show at 9:30 Club was, in one word, flawless. The sound was great, actually not too loud. The visuals were great, utilizing IBM’s original 8-color palette of early 80s computers. And Moyet’s voice was incredible. Her enthusiasm and genuine appreciation of the audience’s reaction was heartwarming. You could tell that she and Vince Clarke were really enjoying playing these songs from 26 years ago, some of which, the ones from their second album, they never had a chance to perform live due to the implosion of the band.

They played all the songs I wanted to hear, yet the evening’s most magical moment came when Moyet asked everyone to silence their conversations for the next three minutes and they launched into the stark, ominous Winter Kills. The crowd relented and it was as quiet as a concert hall. Absolutely spectacular.

The setlist:

Nobody’s Diary
Bad Connection
Mr. Blue
Good Times
Tuesday
Ode to Boy
Goodbye ’70s
Too Pieces
In My Room
Anyone
I Before E Except After C (remixed!)
Walk Away From Love
State Farm
Sweet Thing
Winter Kills
Midnight
Unmarked
Bring Your Love Down (Didn’t I)
Don’t Go

Only You
Situation
