I actually have an errand to run today that does not involve filing government paperwork. I’m going to get a card, or something, to send to my aunt Waima, whose mother passed away on Sunday.

Lucy C, Waima’s mother, was someone whom I met as a child but didn’t really have any much interaction with. So while there is a loss there, my feelings are directed more towards my aunt than anywhere else. And then I realize that this person is my cousin’s grandmother. That brings it in a little closer. Speaking with my uncle today I learn that Lucy was two months short of her 90th birthday in April. My own paternal grandmother will turn 90 in nine days, next Thursday. We have a party planned for that following Saturday and while Lucy was bounding around in good  health I hope something as quick & drastic doesn’t happen again before then.

With all the free time in the world, yet without many resources (cash, car) I feel a little helpless to attend any funeral services. They’re happening quickly, this evening and tomorrow. All I have to send are my thoughts and prayers.

sleepless

After going to bed around 12:30 last night, I woke up at 3:00am and couldn’t get back to sleep. It is now 7:40 and I’ve given up on falling back asleep so I’ve gotten up and made coffee. But I still feel tired.

Last night I was giddy with the prospect of going to La Lomita with Melba, my first dining-out experience in the last two months. I had a $25 gift card which paid for most of my portion so I was able to rationalize the expense of going out. It was a great meal, with great conversation, and I practically licked my plate clean. Hopefully it won’t be another two months until I can return.

Usually after our nights at LL I would wake up at some point in the night, smacking my lips together and needing to hydrate from the split pitcher of margaritas earlier in the evening. Maybe that’s what woke me up last night, maybe not. For when I did wake up, it was with the abruptness of what’s-her-name in Pulp Fiction when she gets the adrenalin styringed straight into her heart. I wasn’t having a dream, at least not one that I can recall, that shocked me awake. Then I just couldn’t get back to sleep.

Now I’m counting down (and hoping I can stay awake until) brunch today. A good friend from NYC, Nancy, is down this weekend and offered to take me to brunch. See how the love is flowin’ y’all? We’re meeting up at Rosemary’s Thyme which I have never been to. Oh! Let’s check out their brunch menu. I think egg’s benedict (always a favorite) or maybe the cured salmon. Or maybe the spinach ravioli from the lunch menu?

I went with the eggs benedict. They were good, but not as good as the eggs neptune at Busboys & Poets that I had a couple of weeks ago. Also joining for brunch was Glen, and also down from New York. He’s a freelance web designer and combined with Nancy’s ad agency experience they really sparked me up on the New York job market and are going to return home and see if they can dig up any contacts or job opportunities up there in the Big Apple.

They had a couple of hours before their train left so we scooted over to the National Building Museum. We visited the Detour exhibit: new and unique rest stops and pit stops along Norway’s National tourist Routes; and Green Community: pollution-contaminated urban spaces and their steps towards turnaround to a viable, livable and public-transit-friendly communities. The Detour exhibit had great models and photography and we discussed how great it would be if our government’s “stimulus package” would incorporate some clever, unique designs instead of awarding the contract to the lowest bidding contractor. Probability factor: not likely. The Green Community exhibit had some really cool electronics in it, including traffic lane entrances that while you walked forward, the vehicle you were standing over (I ended up in the bike lane) would move with you and give you information on that mode of travel. At the end of the exhibit was this wonderfully animated touch-screen of an evolving community and the choices that can be made to improve it and why those options are beneficial. Fun stuff.

another exciting trip

Posted by | Posted in unemployment, urban | Posted on 07-02-2009

To experience the warm-ish weather all of DC is talking about, I make a trip to the grocery store. What is specifically on my list is produce to make some chicken soup. For some reason, maybe because my freezer is full of chicken, I want to get some ground beef to have on hand. But only if it’s on sale, of course.

Being on foot means I can only carry basically what fits into one of those baskets that grocery stores have. I can usually pack it pretty full, with a little overflow, and that’s enough to carry home.

Looking over my receipt now I see there were only two items in my purchase that weren’t on sale: carrots and red onions. Upon closer inspection, I find that I was charged for one red onion (0.74 lb) for $0.95 and seemingly two additional red onions (1.57 lb) for $2.03. I only bought one red onion. I guess something else must have been on the scale or a cash register button was hit twice. Or thrice.

Purchase: $30.43
EBT Card Balance: $145.27
Club Card Savings: $12.46 (29% of purchase)

some randomness

In anticipation of the heating contractors coming in all afternoon I’ve moved the computer from the concrete-enclosed den to the living room and I’m amazed at how fast the wireless connection is now. While tempting to make this move permanent, I don’t want to have the computer occupying my entire tiny dining table. I know how cluttered my computer space normally gets and I don’t want that out in the middle of the room. The dining table also receives its own share of clutter. Doubleplusbad. I do like the full-bar signal strength indicator and the speed though. We’ll see. Come back in a week.

The heating contractors have been here, literally, all winter long trying to get the heat to work. The heating system installed is one of those split systems, where the fan unit is inside and the condensor thingie is outside on the roof or, in this case, around back. The A/C worked fine last summer, I don’t remember it being uncomfortable. But the heating systems in these things do not work, I’ve come to the conclusion. This is the 3rd one they’ve installed and today they’re dismantling the whole thing and then re-installing it. I think they’re biding their time until the weather turns seasons and the heat is no longer needed.

DC is dead on the jobfront, at least in my field. As is Balmer, hon, Philly, Pittsburgh. But I discovered last night that NYC actually has three or four positions available that might be a good fit for me. Is the Big Apple calling me? I love New York but the idea of living there, trying to find an apartment, and not being dirt-poor is daunting. I’ll have to discuss this with mcG. And Single. Both are previous NYC residents and will have some insight.

I guess I should head out to Safeway to spend down the remaining $36 on my EBT card. I won’t lose it; the money rolls over with tomorrow’s monthly deposit. But I should hit those weekly specials before they expire. And now that the heating guys are here (and will be here for a while) I could leave without having to let them in, and also knowing that they’re not going to finish and leave the joint unlocked.

iTunes is pulling up some random, wacky stuff today. Right now: Journey’s Ask The Lonely. WTF? I have 4903 songs in my library and apparently I’m not aware of all of them.

Walking to Safeway I called to check my EBT card balance. I knew it was about $36 but wanted to verify. It turns out that my monthly deposit was made on the 1st, while I thought it didn’t go in until the 4th. The balance was $212.70, which didn’t add up with the $148 original credit and the roughly $36 balance I thought I had. I checked the account activity and this month’s deposit is $176.00, $28 more than last month’s deposit. I started benefits last month on the 6th, so maybe it was prorated for those five days unused? Regardless, I’m happy the deposit had been made and thrilled that it’s even higher as a monthly standard!

Purchase: $37.00
EBT Card Balance: $175.70
Club Card Savings: $13.10 (25% of purchase)

The contractor just walked in on me groovin’ to Andy Gibb’s I Just Wanna Be Your Everything. Now do you understand the invasion of privacy? Yikes.
